Tomorrow is World Down Syndrome Day. Meanwhile lots and lots of people with and without Down Syndrome and those who live and work with them all over this planet will organize and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness. When I think of the little extra of my daughter, I will always remember how scared and depressed I was 16 years ago when we learned about her diagnosis. Scared and depressed, because we knew nothing about this genetic condition. If I would only knew then what I do know now …. and how much she would enrich our lives, and how many awesome and wonderful people I would meet because of her …
One of these amazing companions is the incredibly wonderful Katharina – famous and popular mom blogger „Sonea Sonnenschein“. Eight years ago I had the great pleasure of photographing her adorable young family, and I instantly fell in love with these guys and we have been friends ever since.
The other day Katharina and I had the super rare chance to meet for coffee (when in Cologne, treat yourself in this cute coffeehouse) just us girls … and Lissy. I so much enjoyed our coffee talk and to catch up with this busy lady.
Katharina is a true inspiration and powerhouse. I remember two years ago she finally took the leap and went head over heels into her dream job. Not only does she have amazing sewing skills and knowledge, she’s also such a social media pro. What better job to land as being the social media curator for the fabric production company „Lillestoff“.
I believe nowadays talking about social media can be a never-ending topic. I told Katharina that half a year ago I decided to – against all odds and the flow of traffic – use social media more mindfully, and only once a day, if I go there at all. Social media is certainly not all bad and can be so inspiring if used intentionally. I asked Katharina how she handles the social media blessing and curse, and what she does to not get totally sucked in, and I love her advice: Before she reads any other blogs or scrolls through her social media feed, Katharina tunes out all the voices around her until she actually has gotten something done. It’s important to keep her mind fresh and totally uninfluenced by other people’s ideas. You shouldn’t spend your day consuming everyone else’s, bevore harnessing your own and creating your own beauty: Create before consume.
We also talked about the tiresome follow/unfollow game, the unfortunate trap of self-comparison, that it’s all about likes and followers nowadays, and about all the trolls out there who think it’s a place to trash others or throw up their sometimes mean opinions on everyone and everything … and it felt really good to listen to all her opinions and experiences on that. At the end of the day nothing beats having real awesome coffee with real awesome people. 🙂
Today is International Day of Happiness (well, it certainly doesn’t feel like the beginning of spring, ha! 😉 Katharina is for sure one of the people who truly makes me HAPPY! Please enjoy our little interview – I’ll be back here soon!
